For millions of smokers looking to curb their smoking habit, the arrival of the electronic cigarette was nothing short of miraculous. But, in spite of the fact that the use of an electronic cigarette can have life-altering implications, both in terms of your health and quality of life, vapers must still exercise caution when using these devices.

Safety Tip #1: E-Liquid Can Be Dangerous

Before you object, allow me to clarify. Using e-liquid for its intended purpose poses little risk to human health (certainly many factors less than conventional tobacco products). In fact, study after study continues to corroborate what many in the vaping community are already well aware of: the absence of combustion means that the amount of chemicals that is actually entering the human body is negligible.

With that being said, e-liquid can pose a severe health risk to small children if it is not kept out of their reach. Now almost all e-liquid bottles have child proof caps to prevent small children from ingesting. Not only are e-liquid vials easy to misplace, many of them feature enticing words like “chocolate” or “strawberry” and are often accompanied by an equally inviting image on the label.

Where children are concerned, it’s always best to err on the side of caution. Treat your e-liquid like you would any other liquid product in your home that you wouldn’t want your unsuspecting child to get their hands on.Half a mans face shown exhaling vapour from electronic cigarette close to his mouth

Safety Tip #2: Be Mindful of Where You Charge Your Device

While it may be tempting to charge your device at the closest possible outlet, failing to take the necessary precautions when charging your electronic cigarette can actually pose a shock and choking hazard to your child. If you have children, you know very well that anything and everything can end up in their mouths; if for no other reason than to avoid a potential household accident, charge your device using an outlet that cannot be reached by your child.

Safety Tip #3: Modifications Can Increase The Likelihood of Failure

If you’re a vaper, chances are you’ve heard the term mechanical mod. Vapers modify their mechanical mods to increase the amount of power that is used or the amount of vapor that is generated. While most modifications typically go off without a hitch, it’s important to remember that it is still an electronic device like any other; each is designed for use with specific components and deviating from that could result in a best-case scenario involving a broken device and a worst case scenario of an explosion. Modifications are not for the novice vaper, you must have extensive knowledge of electricity (Volts, ohms, wattage, currents) before making any adjustments to your mechanical mods. Most devices on the market are not meant to be modified and have built in safety features unlike mechanical mods. Beginner and even intermediate vapers should stick to starter kits.

When modifying your device it’s important to exercise sound judgment; if you aren’t confident in what you’re attempting to do its best to leave the device alone.

Safety Tip #4: Vaping Behind the Wheel is Fine, But…

If you have to vape and drive, there’s nothing wrong with that – provided you keep your attention on the road. There’s no arguing that distracted driving is a societal epidemic anywhere you go, so doing things like changing your e-cigarette’s battery, filling your device, or plugging it into a charger while behind the wheel is definitely behaviour that is dangerous while operating a motorized vehicle and should be reconsidered.

Safety Tip #5: Stay Informed

Obviously, there is a lot of debate at the moment surrounding the long-term health effects of using electronic cigarettes. While studies to claim that there is evidence to indicate that e-cigarettes are inherently safe, it is nonetheless important to stay current on the latest findings. Because the e-cigarettes are still in their infancy, there is a degree of uncertainty (albeit a small one) regarding the effects prolonged use can have on human health.

Staying informed about any new to market product you choose to use is good practice, e-cigarettes included.

Safety Tip #6: If You’re New to Vaping, Visit Your Local Vape Shop

Let’s face it; e-cigarettes are pretty unique devices. If you’re looking to purchase your first one, it’s best to take advantage of the knowledge that can be gleaned from the staff working at your local vape shop. In addition to helping you find a flavour you enjoy and a device that best suits your needs they can steer you away from lower quality units and recommend brands with an established reputation.

Purchasing a low quality device may save you a few bucks in the short term, but it might also mean it was produced without following strict safety standards.
